Telling the truth
I am a documentary filmmaker, a seasoned organizer and an artist. My work is driven by a core belief: video and art have the power to shake people’s worldviews.
My approach was formed during the Occupy movement. I was deeply inspired by livestreams from around the world that were exposing the truth. Bold citizen journalists in Syria were risking their lives and dying to expose the brutality of war; citizen journalists in New York were having their studios raided by the police. I could go on.
In this post-truth era, it is difficult to tell these unvarnished stories, but it is more important than ever.
My first solo documentary, Trash Empire, exposed the underbelly of the American agricultural system, and shaped the conversation around food waste. The documentary used my absurd diet, living on food waste for over two years, to highlight policy failures that harm public health and the environment.
That film is linked to my early experiences on the ground. During the Occupy movement in Houston, I fought to protect community groups and public forums both in the streets and in City Hall. For over a decade I was a core organizer of Food Not Bombs in Washington, DC. This hasn’t been without risk, and I continue to believe that when presented with the unvarnished truth, people can be shaken.
I’m always looking for collaborators. We have work to do and important stories to tell. When institutions do the right thing, I want to highlight that. When institutions do the wrong thing, I won’t sugarcoat it.
I believe that I’ve learned the most outside of academia; however I hold a BFA in Studio Art and an MFA in Film and Electronic Media. I am fortunate enough to have time to produce my own films and to teach at the university.
